  • The Gray Ship

    A Novel of Time Travel

    Revised Edition, November 2018

“Captain, we have a problem.”I hit the reply button on the intercom next to my bed.

    “What is it, Lieutenant?”

“It feels like we’re going aground, ma’am.”

No, they weren’t going aground, but yes, they had a problem—a big one.

Get ready for the time travel adventure of your life.

The USS California, a nuclear guided missile cruiser, slips through a time portal or wormhole on its way to Charleston, South Carolina for a commemoration of the Battle of Fort Sumpter. They experienced a rumbling throughout the ship, leading the officer of the deck to report to Captain Patterson that they may have gone aground.

The ship's captain, Ashley Patterson, is a 36-year-old African American woman. She dispatches a SEAL platoon to go ashore and report back.
The SEALs reported the impossible. The California was no longer in 2013, but in 1861, two days before the start of the Civil War. Southerners who saw the California, called her The Gray Ship.

The ship’s chaplain suggests that Ashley consult with a sailor aboard, Jack Thurber, a man her age who had written a best-selling book on the science of time travel. He joined the Navy as an enlisted man, although he had advanced degrees from Ivy League universities, so he could do research for a book on the lives of Navy enlisted people.

Ashley meets with the sailor, and their meeting goes on for hours as Jack explains the phenomenon of time travel to Ashley. Before long, Ashley, a widow, falls madly in love with Jack, who is a widower.

Captain Patterson is faced with the most agonizing decision of her young life.

Abraham Lincoln wants to win the war, and he sees this ship as a key to victory. But Captain Patterson and her crew want to return home to the 21st Century. For them, the Civil War was history. Now, they find that it has only just begun.

Does she risk mutiny, or commit treason?

If she changes history, what will the future look like?

You're in for a nail-biting adventure, one of danger, courage, mystery, and romance. The characters, the startling plot twists, and the scenes pull you into an amazing story.

According to Kirkus Reviews, The Gray Ship is "not only wildly entertaining but also profoundly moving."
